What It’s Like to Work With Me
Working with a tutor can feel like a bit of a gamble
Working with a tutor can feel like a bit of a gamble.
You’re hoping for clarity… but often end up with more worksheets, more pressure, and the quiet sense that you’re still somehow getting it wrong.
So it’s probably easier if I just show you what working with me actually feels like… rather than dressing it up.
It Starts With Slowing Things Down
Most students I work with aren’t struggling because they’re incapable.
They’re struggling because everything has been moving too fast… or in a way that doesn’t quite fit how they think.
So the first thing we do is slow it down.
Not in a “go back to basics” way… but in a way that allows things to actually land.
Because once something makes sense properly, it tends to stick.
There’s No “You Should Already Know This” Here
That phrase alone has probably done more damage to confidence than any exam ever could.
If something hasn’t clicked yet, that’s not a failure… it just means it hasn’t been explained in the right way for you.
So we approach it differently.
We turn things around, look at them from another angle, break them apart, rebuild them… whatever it takes until it feels natural.
No pressure to keep up. No assumption that you should already be somewhere else.
It’s Not About Memorising… It’s About Understanding
A lot of science teaching leans heavily on memorisation.
And to be fair, that can get you through an exam.
But it doesn’t build confidence.
When you understand something, properly… you don’t need to force it into your memory. It just sits there, ready when you need it.
That’s the aim.
Not cramming… but clarity.
Sessions Feel More Like Conversations Than Lessons
There’s structure, of course.
But it doesn’t feel rigid.
Questions are encouraged… going off on a useful tangent is encouraged… even getting something wrong is part of the process, not something to avoid.
Because that’s usually where the real learning happens.
It’s Particularly Suited to Minds That Don’t Fit the Mould
Some students sit still, follow instructions, and absorb information exactly as it’s given.
Others don’t.
They question things. They drift. They overthink. They lose focus… then suddenly lock in.
Those students are often labelled as difficult, distracted, or behind.
In reality, they just need a different rhythm.
That’s where I tend to do my best work.
What You Won’t Get
You won’t get:
- Rushed sessions
- Generic worksheets for the sake of it
- Pressure to perform before things make sense
And you definitely won’t get made to feel like you’re the problem.
What You Will Get
You’ll get:
- A calmer pace
- Clear explanations that adapt to you
- Space to ask questions without hesitation
- A focus on actually understanding what’s going on
And over time… something that’s a bit harder to measure, but far more valuable:
Confidence.
A Final Thought
Most students don’t need more pressure.
They need a different approach.
If that sounds like what’s been missing, then we’ll probably work well together.
